Top Secret America: Bloated government spy agencies
Top Secret America: Bloated government spy agencies
A hidden world, growing beyond control The top-secret world the government created in response to the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, has become so large, so unwieldy and so secretive that no one knows how much money it costs, how many people it employs, how many programs exist within it or exactly how many agencies do the same work. These are some of the findings of a two-year investigation by The Washington Post that discovered what amounts to an alternative geography of the United States, a Top Secret America hidden from public view and lacking in thorough oversight. After nine years of unprecedented spending and growth, the result is that the system put in place to keep the United States safe is so massive that its effectiveness is impossible to determine. The investigation's other findings include: * Some 1271 government organizations and 1931 private companies work on programs related to counterterrorism, homeland security and intelligence in about 10000 locations across the United States. * An estimated 854000 people, nearly 1.5 times as many people as live in Washington, DC, hold top-secret security clearances. * In Washington and the surrounding area, 33 building complexes for top-secret intelligence work are under construction or have been built since September 2001. Together they occupy the equivalent of almost three Pentagons or 22 US Capitol buildings - about 17 million square feet of space. * Many security and intelligence agencies do the same work ...

Further informations about topics addressed are available in favourites, play lists on my channel and complementary video responses. Published with the permission of "DemocracyNow.org - In part two of our national broadcast exclusive on the growing domestic surveillance state, we speak with National Security Agency whistleblower William Binney, and two targeted Americans: Oscar-nominated filmmaker Laura Poitras, and hacker Jacob Appelbaum, who has volunteered for WikiLeaks and now works with Tor Project, a nonprofit organization that teaches about internet security. Binney left the NSA after the 9/11 attacks over his concerns about the agency's widespread surveillance of US citizens. He describes how the FBI later raided his home and held him at gunpoint and notes there is still no effective way of monitoring how and what information the NSA is gathering on US citizens, and how that data is being used. www.democracynow.org http www.wired.com A new exposé in Wired Magazine reveals details about how the National Security Agency is quietly building the largest spy center in the country in Bluffdale, Utah, as part of a secret NSA surveillance program code-named "Stellar Wind." We speak with investigative reporter James Bamford who says the NSA has established listening posts throughout the nation to collect and sift through billions of email messages and phone calls, whether they originate within the country or overseas. The Utah spy center will contain near-bottomless databases to store all forms of communication collected by the agency. This includes the complete contents of private emails, cell phone calls and Google searches, as well as all sorts of personal data trails — parking receipts, travel itineraries, bookstore purchases and other digital "pocket litter." conspiracyscope.blogspot.com www.youtube.com

NSA Pressured LA Times To Kill Domestic Spying Story
Yesterday Nightline featured a story about former AT&T technician and whistleblower Mark Klein. While working at AT&T headquarters in San Francisco, Klein discovered (and had the courage to speak out about) a secret eavesdropping room that all of the company's traffic was routed through. With the help of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, Mr. Klein went public back in April 2006, but alleges John Negroponte and Michael Hayden pressured the LA Times to kill the story.

Mike German & Scott Crow Discuss FBI's Expanded Domestic Surveillance Program. 1 of 2
DemocracyNow.org - Civil liberties advocates are raising alarm over news the FBI is giving agents more leeway to conduct domestic surveillance. According to the New York Times, new guidelines will allow FBI agents to investigate people and organizations "pro-actively" without firm evidence for suspecting criminal activity. Democracy Now! interviews former FBI agent Mike German, who now works at the American Civil Liberties Union. Also interviewed is Texas activist Scott Crow, who has been the focus on intense FBI surveillance from 2001 until at least 2008. Using the Freedom of Information Act, Crow received 440 pages of heavily-redacted documents revealing the FBI had set up a video camera outside his house, traced the license plates of cars parked in front of his home, recorded the arrival and departure of his guests and observed gatherings that Crow attended at bookstores and cafes. The agency also tracked Crow's emails and phone conversations and picked through his trash to identify his bank and mortgage companies. "It definitely has been traumatizing at different points," says Crow. "But if we don't come out and be open about this, then they've already won, and the surveillance and the 'War on Terror' wins against us." Italian Reporter: Mohammed Merah Was A French Spy
Italian Reporter: Mohammed Merah Was A French Spy
04/01/2012 Following the multiethnic and multi-religious shooting of seven people in southwestern France, authorities have insisted that alleged gunman Mohammed Merah acted alone. But a reporter with Italian newspaper Il Foglio is citing an anonymous source that Merah was both a religious extremist and a spy for French intelligence. A multitude of questions have followed Merah's death. How was Merah, who was on welfare, able to arrange his 2010 trip across Israel, Jordan, Afghanistan, Pakistan and possibly elsewhere? Il Foglio's source claims that French authorities had struck a deal with Merah: freedom of movement in exchange for valuable information. Prior to the shootings, France's domestic spy agency says they had followed Merah for more than a year. They had been tracking his brother, now in custody, since 2007. But it took France more than 10 days to track down Mohammed Merah: he was at his home, not some secret hideout. Speculation is mounting that Merah may have flown under the radar because France thought he was only working for them. France's domestic spy chief increased speculation by saying that during the 32-hour siege Merah asked for a local intelligence officer by name, and that he told her, "I was going to call you to say I had some tip-offs for you, but actually I was going to [kill] you." This admission has many wondering just how much contact Merah had with France's security agencies. France's foreign and domestic intelligence agencies have both ...

Is the NSA reading your e-mail? pbs.org/FRONTLINE
Former AT&T technician Mark Klein and internet expert Brian Reid describe an NSA listening room that Klein discovered while working at the company's operations center. In "Spying on the Home Front" FRONTLINE talks to intelligence insiders and asks: Is the Bush administration's domestic war on terrorism jeopardizing our civil liberties? Coming May 15 to PBS and online at www.pbs.org In "Spying on the Home Front," coming May. 15, 2007 at 9pm (check local listings) Reporter Hedrick Smith presents new material on how the National Security Agency's domestic surveillance program works and examines clashing viewpoints on whether the President has violated the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) and infringed on constitutional protections. In another dramatic story, the program shows how the FBI vacuumed up records on 250000 ordinary Americans who chose Las Vegas as the destination for their Christmas-New Year's holiday, and the subsequent revelation that the FBI has misused National Security Letters to gather information. Probing such projects as Total Information Awareness, and its little known successors, Smith discloses that even former government intelligence officials now worry that the combination of new security threats, advances in communications technologies, and radical interpretations of presidential authority may be threatening the privacy of Americans.

The Private Life of an MI5 Spy - Stella Rimington
The Private Life of an MI5 Spy - Stella Rimington
Complete video at: fora.tv Stella Rimington, former Director-General of MI5, discusses the difficulty of juggling her life as a mother and her job as a spy. To conceal her job, Rimington concocted cover stories ranging from boot-buyer to cosmetics representative. ----- Imagine your partner takes up a diplomatic post in India. While you're there, playing the role of the dutiful spouse at a cocktail party, a man taps you on the shoulder and asks if you'd like a job helping him in his office. It turns out that the shoulder-tapper is not just any man, but a spy. You accept, and within a short time are embarking on a career full of intrigue and mystery. Sounds unlikely, something from a fanciful movie plot? Well this is not some work of fiction, but rather how Stella Rimington found herself working for British Domestic Intelligence Agency, MI5. This change of career saw her progress through the ranks of MI5 before ascending to the highest position of MI5, becoming the first female Director General of the Agency in 1992. Some say that Ian Fleming based his character M, played by Judy Dench in the James Bond films, on Rimington. She'd say that her experiences have made her a writer. Recently in Australia she talked at a Dymocks Literary Lunch about the line between fact and fiction. Stella Rimington says she's had 4 careers. First as a Librarian/archivist, then a diplomats wife, MI5, and now as an author. In this field she has written four books, her first a memoir titled Open ...
